Girl sold into marriage escapes

By Mansoor Mirani

KHAIRPUR: A girl who accused her parents of selling her into marriage for a sum of Rs60,000, escaped from the house of her buyer-husband and took refuge at the residence of a notable of her community in the Gul Mohammad Khorkhani village on Thursday.

Ms Saiqa, daughter of Hakim Khorkhani of Jeand Khorkhani village, told journalists on Friday that her father had sold her for Rs60,000 a few days ago and solemnised her nikkah with Munawar Khorkhani against her will.

She said that she had raised objections to the marriage and also told the nikkah witnesses that she was not willing to marry but neither her father nor the witnesses took her seriously and forcibly solemnised the nikkah.

After the ‘forced’ nikkah, she was sent to the bridegroom’s home from where she managed to escape and take refuge at the residence of Banho Khan Khorkhani, said Ms Saiqa.

She said that she did not accept her marriage and appealed to high-ups to provide her protection.

Munawar Khorkhani insisted that his nikkah was legitimate and Saiqa was his wife. Banho Khan Khorkhani was not available for comments.

Sources in the police said that DPO of Khairpur had taken notice of the incident and directed the police concerned to investigate and submit a report within 24 hours.
