Girl set alight by husband, grievously injured

Karachi: A woman was set alight by her husband over a petty matter in the Chakiwara police limits. Earlier, the victim had alleged that she was receiving death threats from her in-laws.

According to injured Saweeta, a Hindu and a resident of Hazara Colony, Rangiwara, Lyari, was residing with her family in Mauripur area before her marriage and around five months ago she fell in love with Kara, a contractor by profession and her father’s co-worker. About three months ago, she married Kara and before marriage he had not informed her that he was married and had five children. His first wife is residing in Mauripur with her five children.

She added that she married Kara of her own will without the permission of her parents and from the beginning of her marriage her husband tortured her and on her insistence, he had got her a house Hazara Colony, but was not catering for her financial needs and visited the house occasionally. She said he was ignoring her.

On June-9, her husband Kara came home and got into a quarrel with her. Later, however, the issue was settled and he had given her a drink which was actually laced with some harmful substance due to which she fell unconscious and Kara poured Kerosene oil on her, setting her alight, and fled. She immediately ran into the bathroom and extinguished the fire.

As a result she received burn injuries on her left arm and her neck, she managed to save herself and screaming her loudly. After some time, her husband Kara again visited the house and takes her to her grandmother house at Nayabad area and left her there. During her stay there, her aunt visited the grandmotherÂ’s house and took her to a private hospital and started her treatment.

On June-14, she went to Civil hospital for treatment and she was sent to Burns Ward. Later, the hospital officials told her that this was a police case and they had informed the police and that she should do the same. After getting treatment, she went to the Chakiwara police station for report. However, before she reached there, her brother-in-law Rao and Kanta, first wife of her husband, came and threatened her with dire consequences.

She, however, resisted and headed for the police station and lodged an FIR against Kara.

Police have conducted raids for the arrest of accused Kara’s brother but he also had left Karachi. Further probe is under way.
