Functioning of Women Development department

The Women Development Department Sindh which was created back, in 2003 along with Directorate of Women Development Sindh the sole women development agency at provincial level.

There was only one development scheme at the time of inception. Since then the Directorate has grown significantly enlarging its scope of activities to all over Sindh building linkages at grass root level with the line departments and civil society as well. Focusing on the aim of women empowerment the Directorate has twelve development schemes to promote legal, medical, socio-economic and educational support to the needy women of the province.

The Directorate having a participating approach has initiated strong vertical and horizontal linkage with the civil society to bring all the stakeholders on board, in the development process. The United Nations Millennium Development Goals targeting year 2015 has also urged for adopting a provocative and pragmatic approach in project design and monitoring.

The paradigm shift from welfare to development approach has placed great responsibility on the Directorate so far as policy formulation and implementation is concerned it requires capacity building and enhancement of the Directorate’s status to achieve the desired objectives of women development.

The efficient and effective coordination and implementation of projects/programmes at grass-roots level is warranted through restructuring and upgrading of the directorate. In spite of short age of technical and support staffs the efforts are being made to achieve the targets and services are being provided to the needy women, playing role of catalyst and lobbyist for elimination of discrimination against women and enforcement of women rights.
