PESHAWAR: The Federal Shariat Court (FSC) Tuesday allowed appeal of a woman and two men against their conviction by a trial court under Hudood laws.
The Izafi Ilaqa Qazi (additional district and sessions judge) of Malakand had handed them down 10-year imprisonment each for their alleged involvement in adultery. However, the FSC set aside the verdict of the trial court and ordered their acquittal.
Meanwhile, a division bench of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) commuted the two-year sentence of a Ghana national who was sentenced to five years in jail by a trial court in a drug trafficking case.
The bench comprised Justice Jehanzeb Rahim and Justice Ziauddin Khattak.
The Anti-Narcotics Force arrested the Ghana national, Overo, along with Filipino woman, Revra, on January 1 this year in a raid on a hotel on Grand Trunk Road. The trial court awarded one-year imprisonment to Revra and five-year imprisonment to Overo. However, the PHC acquitted the Filipino woman and commuted the imprisonment of Overa to two years.
District and Sessions Judge of Peshawar Miftahuddin Khan and several other judicial magistrates issued release orders of dozens of prisoners jailed for petty crimes. Following the directives of PHC Chief Justice Tariq Pervez Khan, they paid a visit to the Central Jail, Peshawar.
