Female lawyers being hired to deal with women’s cases

Karachi: The Sindh government is recruiting female lawyers at district level to deal with cases of women, Sindh Law Minister Mohammed Ayaz Soomro informed the assembly.

Responding to a point of order by Shama Mithani, the minister said that there were many cases of poor women who could not afford legal fees. He said that with the consultation of coalition parties, the provincial government had hired female lawyers, while some female lawyers were keen to work voluntarily. He asked legislators to suggest names of female lawyers for recruitment.

Pakistan Muslim League–Functional legislator Nusrat Abbasi said that there was shortage of urea fertilizer. She said that fertilizer was being sold in black market and alleged that officials concerned were involved in minting money by taking advantage of shortage of fertilizer. Abdul Sattar Rajpar said that revenue officials were involved in this black-marketing.

Minister for Agriculture, Ali Nawaz Shah, said that there was no shortage of fertilizer but distributors were involved in black-marketing. He said that according to the law, a fine of up to Rs30,000 could be imposed against them, but the law has no deterrence value because distributors earn millions of rupees.

Najmuddin Abro said that rains in December were unprecedented and destroyed crops and houses. He urged the government to announce a relief package for the affected poor.

Another legislator said that the salary of irrigation employees worth Rs1.3 million had been stolen in Mirpurkhas with the connivance of officials concerned, but no action had been taken against them. The irrigation minister Murad Ali Shah said that he would look into the matter.

Another legislator said that that a girl had been bitten by 12 dogs in Kacho area of Dadu district but no vaccine was available there. The health minister said that he would take action provided details were given to him. He said that legislators should also bring the issue of non-availability of injections to his notice in public interest. A treasury female legislator said that she had taken notice of the incident, and had asked Dadu health EDO to provide injections to the girl.

Opposition MPA Shaharyar Maher said that four persons, including a child, were killed in Shikarpur on 26th January but the police had not taken any action against criminals on account of “jurisdiction dispute.”

A minority MPA said that minorities were being targeted by criminals in Rato Dero Taluka since 15 days. He said that he had approached Larkana DPO, but thus far, no concrete action had been taken.
