Elderly widow burnt alive in Korangi

Karachi: A seventy-year-old widow was burnt alive in the city on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Zaibun Nisa, a resident of Korangi.

Atif Ali Shah, the SHO of Zaman Town police station, said that a daughter of the deceased, Shanila, who lived near her mother’s house, told the police that her mother had visited her house at about 1.30pm on Wednesday.

After she had gone back to her house, Shanila saw smoke emitting from her mother’s house.

She rushed towards her mother’s house and also called her elder brother, who, like Shanila, lived nearby. They, along with the people of the area, broke the door open and found their mother burnt fatally with her hands tied to her bed.

SHO Shah said that the deceased had had an abnormal son, Zafar, who had been living with her.

According to the children of Nisa, Zafar usually remained outdoors. He had returned to the house at 2pm for lunch, but they could not say if he had been at the house at the time of the offence.

The SHO said that police had collected some evidence from the house and were waiting for the medical report to see if the deceased had been burnt with kerosene or with some other liquid.

SHO Shah said that it seemed that she had been killed out of some personnel enmity.

Meanwhile, the Sindh Chief Minister, Qaim Ali Shah, taking notice of the incident, directed the DIG East to present a report on the incident.

He said that stern punishment would be given to those involved in the crime. He also offered condolences to the family of the victim.
