Cop accused of releasing kidnapper for bribe

By: Arshad Dogar

LAHORE: A sub-inspector of the Sabzazar police station released an accused, who was captured kidnapping a child, after allegedly taking bribe.

The sub-inspector also allegedly started threatening the parents of the child with dire consequences for initiating legal action against him. On August 23, at around 1:30 pm, two-year-old girl Fiza Batool, daughter of Liaqat Ali, a resident of Dubanpura, was playing in the street when an unidentified man tried to kidnap her.

Locals caught him and informed police at 15. A police team headed by SI Rasheed reached the scene and took the accused, identified as Asif, son of Ashraf, into custody. The accused was detained at the Sabzazar police station for two days but no action was initiated against him. The SI, Rasheed, allegedly released him after receiving bribe.

Shahzadi Bibi, mother of the victim, told The News her relative Yasin had a scuffle with her son at school after which Yasin had threatened to kidnap her daughters. She claimed Yasin had hired Asif for kidnapping her child but he was caught.

She also charged that SI Rasheed had released Asif without taking action and was threatening her that he would register a case against her and her family under heinous offences. Shahzadi said she had also filed an application at the CCPO office for justice and the CCPO marked the application to the Sadar division SP for inquiry.

When contacted, SI Rasheed said Shahzadi had a clash with her relatives and wanted to trap Yasin by staging the drama of kidnapping. He also denied taking bribe from the accused for his release. To a question that locals had captured the accused and handed over to him, he said he had to verify it.

He accused the family of prostitution but changed his stance within no time saying that the fact could also not be verified. “I am ready to face more than 50 applications at any forum,” he maintained.
