Asma Alamgir made PPP women wing president

By Syed Bukhar Shah

PESHAWAR: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairperson President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed MNA from Peshawar Asma Arbab Alamgir as PPP women wing president.

A notification, issued by the party’s co-chairman through Political Secretary Rukhsana Bangash, MNA, on Monday, directed Asma Arbab Alamgir to supervise the affairs of the wing with immediate effect.

Asma Alamgir, who had been working as provincial coordinator, said she had accepted the assignment as a challenge. She said people from all walks of life suffered badly due to terrorist attacks in the NWFP and elsewhere in the country. “The ongoing war against terrorism is the war of our survival and we will have to win it,” she said, adding that her party’s government with the support of people would restore peace and ensure the security of lives and properties of its citizen. The lawmaker said she would try to bring to the fore the educated women in the party so that they could play their role in the ongoing situation. She said it was not the responsibility of the men alone to fight against terrorism but the women would also have to come forward for the establishment of a peaceful society. Asked about the workers’ grievances within the PPP NWFP, particularly in women wing, she said the party activists were, no doubt, facing problems.

Terming the PPP activists an asset, she said they had always rendered sacrifices greater than those in the other parties. The lawmaker said she would visit all areas of the province to meet party workers and help resolve their problems.

The newly appointed chief of the PPP women wing is wife of Federal Minister for Communications Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan and daughter-in-law of late chief minister Arbab Jehangir Khan. She was elected to the National Assembly on the women’s reserved seats in 2008.
