Alleged rape victim’s mother slits wrists after alleged harassment

KARACHI: The mother of an alleged attempted rape victim slit her wrist on Tuesday after police officers allegedly harassed her to withdraw her daughter’s case.

The family has claimed that their neighbour, Mansoor, who lives on the first floor of their building in Gulshan-e-Iqbal tried to rape their five-year-old girl on Sunday.

A case of attempted rape was later filed by the girl’s mother against the neighbour at the Sharae Faisal police station. The girl’s mother said that police officers barged into her house on Tuesday, pulled her hair, slapped her and demanded that she take the case back.

The woman told the media that for the past two years, she had been living alone in her house with her five children as her husband has been working in Lahore. She said that her neighbours were affiliated with a political party and were using their connections in a bid to scare her and force her to take the complaint back. “I want the case to be transferred.”

SP Ali Asif said that an inquiry would be conducted into the woman’s statement against the accused men and a report would be presented in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Meanwhile, the adviser to chief minister on human rights Nadia Gabol visited the girl’s family and said that action would be taken against the police officers involved in the intimidation and harassment.
